ABOUT US

Shero Comics is an award-winning multimedia company creating culturally relevant stories that empower youth through literacy, confidence, and representation.

Founded by Shequeta Smith, Shero Comics uses comics and storytelling as tools for social-emotional learning, anti-bullying, and English language development—meeting students where they are, especially reluctant readers and visual learners.

Since 2018, we have reached over 5,000 youth through workshops, school visits, and community programs, and have independently sold over 8,500 comics and 50+ collector dolls. Our flagship manga series, Young Grandmaster Choi, is currently being piloted in schools across the country as a literacy and SEL resource, with Spanish and Korean translations expanding its reach to multilingual learners.

Our work has been recognized on a global scale. Young Grandmaster Choi books and collectibles have been archived in the Korea Manhwa Museum, The Strong National Museum of Play, and the Library of Congress—a rare distinction for an independent, Black woman-owned comics company. We also received support from Melinda Gates’ Pivotal Ventures for our documentary The Shero Universe, which explores the history of Black women in comics.

Beyond publishing, we are building a community ecosystem through initiatives like SheroCon, an all-female comic convention that brings together thousands of attendees each year, and partnerships with organizations like the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles and LAUSD schools, where we are an approved vendor.

At Shero Comics, we believe storytelling is more than entertainment—it’s a pathway to confidence, creativity, and connection. As schools begin rethinking screen-based learning, we are helping lead the shift back to reading by using comics as a bridge—transforming how the next generation engages with stories.
