Back at North Rowan Elementary School, around the first or second grade, one of the greatest storytellers of all time, Jackie Torrance, came to my school for an author visit and told us ghost stories in the school library.

Years later, at North Rowan High School, my teachers began grooming me to become a school teacher, even though I was headed to college to become a pediatrician. After graduating from North Carolina State University, and passing up an opportunity to teach English in South Korea, I fulfilled the wishes of my high school teachers by becoming a substitute teacher for two years in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.

Over two decades later, just like Jackie Torrance, I’ve become a great storyteller. However, instead of telling ghost stories, I tell my stories through adventurous screenplays and colorful, educational comic books. Still, the teaching part of me is very much alive, and I’ve spent the past Seven Years speaking to students, and in more recent years, teaching them the process of writing and outlining comic books!

Today, in honor of it being a back-to-school week, and with our newest manga, Young Grandmaster Choi II, dropping on September 10th, I wanted to kick off the 2024-2025 school year by giving away TWO FREE comic book workshops!

AN AUTHOR VISIT TO PAUL REVERE CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL

I had an amazing day at Paul Revere Middle School in Brentwood/Pacific Palisades. This school is a magnet school that buses students in from Northridge to Compton. After meeting their teachers, and seeing all this school has to offer, I see why parents are pushing to send their kids here. They have a freaking farm on campus and an agriculture department!

The kids were adorable and so smart. Though I’ve spoken at schools all over the world, this was my first time doing a presentation that included a mini-comic book workshop. The presentation kept their attention for the most part. I had cleverly placed comic book trailers and videos in between some of the slides to keep them interested. However, the comic book workshop part of the presentation was a HIT with every group of all six hundred students I spoke to, from sixth graders to eighth graders!

Instead of doing breakouts like I originally planned, I had students raise their hands to give me on-the-spot dialogue for a blank page of “Young Grandmaster Choi” that we wrote together before their teacher-librarian and I acted out each character. The kids had jokes, they had slang, but most importantly they had fun!

A CULVER CITY HIGH SCHOOL AUTHOR VISIT

My first Author Visit of the year went down at Culver City High School, where I was invited to speak to seventy-five students.

My first Author Visit of the year went down at Culver City High School, where I was invited to speak to seventy-five students. Culver City High School holds a special place in my heart since their students volunteered for our first two years of SheroCon.

On this visit, I spoke to students from the architecture and game design classes, as well as several more students who were simply interested in all things Shero. I discovered that Culver City High School is the only school in LAUSD that has a brand new two-year game development program. That was awesome for me since I’m currently building a gaming division. While there, I was able to set up a table and do an on-the-spot beta test for the prototype of my upcoming mobile and PC game, “Rayven Choi: Reaper’s Run.”

After getting feedback on the game, their gaming teacher, Mr. Darien, invited me to check out their new gaming lab, which includes an old-school arcade. Before leaving, I had an opportunity to see the games they were building and find out which game they loved the most.

We definitely need MORE of this in all schools across America. Those game design students were totally geeked about gaming and were filled with pride about the work they were doing.
